LeBron “King” James Joins Twitter in Advance of Free Agency Announcement

LeBron James, the most sought after free agent in NBA history (at least that’s what he says) has just joined Twitter as @KingJames.

LeBron James

LeBron James, despite arguably being the best basketball player in the world, doesn’t have a tremendous online presence, at least in relation to other NBA players.

The current free agent appears to be attempting a change on that front, having recently created LeBronJames.com, his official website that is “Getting Closer” to being functional. He took another major step Tuesday as well, joining Twitter under the handle “@kingjames.”

Lest you think this is some sort of fake Twitter account — because there are plenty, after all — don’t worry, his publicist confirmed that James has joined the social media service.

While he’s not following anyone yet, he has managed to rack up over 75,000 followers since the news popped up a few hours ago. And given the current growth rate for a casual ten-minute refresh of his web page (nearly 5,000 added for that timeframe), it’s not impossible for Bron to top Dwyane Wade (450,000-some) and or make a run at Shaquille O’Neal‘s nearly 3,000,000 today.

More importantly, Bron hasn’t tweeted anything yet. But if I were a betting man — knowing that he plans on dropping his free agency choice on his website — I’d put money that his first Tweet would occur sometime this week (think midday Friday) and will direct people to “check out LebronJames.com to find out the latest on my free agency decision.”

He likely won’t announce on Twitter, and certainly there will be a press conference, but it’s obvious that LeBron’s camp wants this “online presence” business ramped up ASAP. And what’s even more obvious is that they realize there’s no better time to get a strong push than when everyone in the world is holding their breath, waiting to see where LeBron will play in 2010.
